“Flurona”? Now we all have to worry about a double infection

What is Flurona? There has never been anything like it in the world. In Israel, corona and influenza were diagnosed in one person for the first time. Experts suspect that there could be more cases in the country.

Flurona: No matter if alpha, beta or omicron. There have been some corona variants since the beginning of the pandemic. But now a worrying case is making the rounds that has never before existed in this form anywhere in the world. In Israel, a pregnant woman contracted the coronavirus and the flu at the same time (“Flurona”) . But how dangerous is the double infection?

Flurona

What is Flurona?

Flurona is NOT a new corona variant! Flurona simply describes the simultaneous illness of COVID-19 and the flu (Influenza, English: “flu”), respectively the simultaneous detection of SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) and flu viruses .

The term ” Flurona ” is circulating in various media. What is Flurona? What’s behind Flurona? Is Flurona a new corona variant that triggers the COVID-19 disease? Flurona is NOT a new corona variant!

Flurona is an artificial word

The term Flurona is a made-up word composed of the English “Flu” (English for flu) and Corona.
Flurona = flu + corona

First case of Flurona discovered in Israel

The first case with Flurona was discovered in Israel. As various media unanimously reported on December 31, 2021, the double infection was found in a hospital in the city of Petah Tikva (Israel) in a new mother..

Pregnant women infected with corona and influenza at the same time

The risk of a double infection has always been lurking in the background.

During a comprehensive examination, the doctors in Israel found that the young woman had been infected with both the coronavirus and the influenza. Experts gave the rare double infection the name “Flurona” – a combination of Corona and the word “flu” (English for flu). Fortunately, according to the hospital, the young mother has mild symptoms.

▶ However, it should not be forgotten that such a double infection harbors many pitfalls, especially for pregnant women and other risk groups, because both viral diseases put a strain on the respiratory system. However, the Israeli Ministry of Health has not yet carried out detailed investigations into the severity of the disease.

“Flurona”: Risk groups should also get vaccinated against influenza

The many corona measures ensure that most people now hardly come into contact with flu viruses. As a result, the flu season practically missed last year. Because of this, people also lack immune protection – unless they are vaccinated against influenza.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), risk groups, i.e. senior citizens, people with chronic illnesses as well as pregnant women and people in nursing homes, are particularly at risk. A double infection could even be life-threatening for these people. The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) therefore advises people over the age of 60 * in particular to be vaccinated against both the flu and the coronavirus. A time interval between vaccinations is not necessary because the influenza vaccine is a so-called dead vaccine.

“Flurona”: double infection with corona and flu “somewhat more dangerous”

It is assumed, however, that there have already been other “Flurona” cases worldwide, although the patients have not been tested for both viruses.

“The double infection with Sars-Cov-2 and influenza viruses is by no means new and there have been reports of double infections since the beginning of the pandemic, first from China and then from many other affected countries”

A double infection is even “a little more dangerous” than “just” a corona disease. Basically, however, the Covid infection has more dangerous consequences for the body. While the flu causes fluid to accumulate in cells of the lungs, the coronavirus can damage the organ’s blood vessels.

Corona or flu? These are the differences

Flurona

Cough, fever, headache … These can be signs of an influenza flu, but also a corona infection

In the first two to four days in particular, the symptoms are as good as the same.

Many Covid 19 sufferers have a fever – however, the body temperature rises more slowly than with the flu.

Pain in the limbs can occur in both cases – but more often with the flu

A dry, tickly cough without phlegm formation, on the other hand, is a more common sign of Covid-19

Again with influenza, with corona, sneezing is considered a symptom and thus speaks for a harmless cold

However, since many Covid 19 sufferers show different or milder symptoms, ultimately only a corona test brings clarity.

Several cases of “Flurona” have been identified in Catalonia, a co-infection of Covid-19 and influenza which, according to the director of the Catalan Health Service (CatSalut), Gemma Craywinckel.

At the moment the Spanish see it as no more serious or complex than the previous Corona cases identified. Flurona cases are treated in the same way as individual cases of Covid-19.
