What will be the make up of the new German coalition government? Who will be taking over which ministry? Find out

The German coalition government talks, consisting of SDP, FDP and the Greens , are nearing the end. A coalition agreement has been announced for the last full week of November. In the course of this, however, it must also be made public who is to hold which ministerial office in the future. The current status of the negotiations point to a list ministers from each party. Find out which ministries will be headed by the SPD, Greens of FDP below.

Federal Chancellor

German coalition Government
Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz (SPD) is already the designated successor to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who is vacating the chair after a total of 16 years in office. In the recent past there had been repeated excitement about the stoic Scholz – just remember the Wirecard affair and the Cum-Ex scandal – but he was ultimately able to prevail against Baerbock and Armin Laschet (CDU) .

Ministry of Finance

German coalition Government
Christian Lindner

Christian Lindner (FDP) is commonly seen as the face of his party, to which he has been a member for over 25 years. In the future, it will be his responsibility to manage the affairs of the Ministry of Finance and thus to follow Olaf Scholz. Lindner’s statement “It is better not to govern than to govern wrongly” after the election failure in the 2017 federal elections is still unforgettable. Four years later, he could achieve his personal goal.

Ministry of Economy and Climate

German coalition Government
Robert Habeck

Robert Habeck (Greens) was under discussion as the Greens’ top candidate for the federal election until spring 2021. The end of the song is well known: Co-boss Annalena Baerbock became the strong face of the Greens. Now, however, Habeck is to be given the chance to act as Federal Minister and thus to succeed Peter Altmaier.

Foreign Ministry

German coalition Government
 Annalena Baerbock

From nobody to green savior to possible foreign minister – Annalena Baerbock has had a turbulent year. In this case, the strong woman of the Greens would succeed Heiko Maas – and ultimately participate in and in the new government, even if differently than originally planned.

Interior Ministry

German coalition Government
Christine Lambrecht

Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) is to remain with the Federal Government and hold the office of Minister of the Interior. An office that is currently still held by Horst Seehofer (CSU).

Ministry of Transformation / construction

German coalition Government
Svenja Schulze

Svenja Schulze from the SPD is in discussion for this ministerial post. An office that the Social Democrat is currently already in Angela Merkel’s cabinet.

Ministry of Health

German coalition Government
Michael Theurer

As already outlined, Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) will be followed by Michael Theurer, the FDP man. The SPD health economist Karl Lauterbach would be left out in this case.

Ministry of Labor and Social affairs

German coalition Government
Hubertus Heil

The current incumbent Hubertus Heil (SPD) is intended for this ministerial post. Heil has been filling this office since March 2018.

Transport Ministry

German coalition Government
Anton Hofreiter

There could be a change in personnel at this ministerial post. Specifically, Andreas Scheuer (CSU) would be replaced by Cem Özdemir instead of Anton Hofreiter from the Greens.

Ministry of Defense

German coalition Government
Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann

This job is currently carried out by the former federal chairman of the CDU, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. Her potential successor: Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann from the FDP.

Justice Ministry

German coalition Government
Volker Wissing

Either Volker Wissing or Marco Buschmann from the FDP are earmarked for this post. One of the two gentlemen would succeed Christine Lambrecht.

Ministry of Environment / Agriculture / Food

German coalition Government
Steffi Lemke

An office held by the controversial Julia Klöckner. Steffi Lemke from the Greens is under discussion as her successor.

Ministry of Education and research

German coalition Government
Klara Geywitz

CDU politician Anja Karliczek is responsible for the affairs of this ministry. According to the plans of the traffic light coalition, however, it is to be replaced by Klara Geywitz (SPD).

Family Ministry

German coalition Government
Katrin Göring-Eckardt

In addition to her work as Minister of Justice, SPD politician Christine Lambrecht is also responsible for the areas of family, senior citizens, women and youth. Should she become Interior Minister within the framework of the new federal government, however, Katrin Göring-Eckardt from the Greens is under discussion as her successor.

Ministry of Development

German coalition Government
Bärbel Kofler

Since Angela Merkel’s third term in office, Gerd Müller (CSU) has headed the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. However, he is to be replaced by Bärbel Kofler (SPD).

German coalition Government
Wolfgang Schmidt

Last but not least, there remains the management of the Chancellery, which is currently the responsibility of Helge Braun (CDU) . The name Wolfgang Schmidt (SPD) stands as a legitimate successor in the room.

“Ministry of Culture”

Claudia Roth

“Ministry of Culture” is not a full-fledged ministry. Claudia Roth from the Greens will be the new Minister of State for Culture and successor to Monika Grütters (CDU).
