10,200 Euros!! That’s what an unvaccinated corona patient costs Germany (Don’t be selfish! Get vaccinated!)

A new IfW study shows that the treatment of unvaccinated corona patients causes health costs to explode in Germany. This will continue to fuel the dispute over the 2G rules.

It is a gloomy forecast: The renewed spread of the corona virus is driving healthcare patient costs to new heights. The inpatient treatment of unvaccinated patients in particular is an enormous cost driver. This emerges from a calculation published on Friday by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW). Accordingly, there is a risk of hospital treatment for people with Covid 19 disease totaling around 180 million Euros per week in winter!

Don’t be selfish! Get vaccinated!

At the same time as the publication, the study authors did not spare criticism. Researcher Lena Merkel announced on the institute’s website that a vaccination offer had been made to all adults by the end of July. It can therefore be assumed that “a major part of the expenses for inpatient treatments would have been avoidable,” wrote a scientist from the research area of global health economics.

Numbers are increasing – unvaccinated patients are causing costs to explode

The figures confirm this suspicion: For their study, the researchers first examined the months of August and September of this year. Since the start of the study, the proportion of unvaccinated people in inpatient corona treatments has been around 85 percent. According to an evaluation by the AOK, the average costs for this are around 10,200 euros per patient. Projected over the two months examined, the total expenditure is more than 180 million euros.

For the coming months, the IfW is expecting a rapid increase. If the vaccination rate does not increase and the prognoses of the Robert Koch Institute of a seven-day incidence of 400 per 100,000 inhabitants prove to be true, then an increase in treatment costs of 180 million euros per week can be expected, warns the research team.

In fact, the spread of coronavirus is on the rise again. According to the RKI, the seven-day incidence in Germany rose again to 95.1 on Friday, October 22, 2021. This was the first time since the middle of May that the value exceeded the 90 mark again. 150 districts and municipalities have already cracked the 100 value again. The hotspots are mainly in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia. But in Lower Saxony, too, the numbers continue to rise. And in Bremen there is already a Corona warning level 1 again.

2G or 3G? German state ministers advise on the extension of the corona rules

The IfW study and the increasing numbers are likely to fuel the debate about how to proceed in the corona crisis. Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) declared the end of the epidemic situation a few days ago . But the federal states are currently reacting cautiously to the possible loosening of the corona rules .

On Friday, the state ministers discussed the extension of protective measures that had already been imposed at their annual meeting in Königswinter. For example, a draft resolution should be drawn up, according to which the federal states can also issue hygiene, distance or mask rules in the winter months, but also, in an emergency, contact restrictions. There has also been a dispute for days about special rights for recovered and vaccinated people (2G) . Above all, the question of whether supermarkets or retailers are allowed to deny unvaccinated access to the shop caused a lot of fuss.
