Lidl is jumping on the nutritional hype surrounding the cannabis plant and has been selling hemp food in selected regional branches since Monday (August 9th). But the group is not the first: Other discounters and drugstores have long since had hemp foods, cosmetics and oils in their ranges.
Why is Lidl now selling cannabis products?
Lidl has decided to jump on the nutrition trends and product innovations. It is now trying to reorient itself to customer requirements by designing a range of Lidl cannabis nutritional products. The hype about hemp products is huge: Other discounters and drugstores have also been relying on food with cannabis seeds for a long time!
Do the Lidl cannabis cookies get you high?
No! Whether chocolate or brownie: the foods only contain cannabis seeds.
Cannabis seeds and seed oils have no intoxicating effect. The intoxicating or calming substances of the cannabis plant (THC and CBD) are mainly found in the bulbs, leaves and flowers.
Because, according to the supplier The Green Dealers, the items lack both the psychoactive substance THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and the non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD). THC is illegal in Germany. CBD is not allowed for the food market.
Starting this week, a total of 21 different products will be available as promotional goods at Lidl. These include “cannabis cookies”, “hash brownies” and a “cannabis energy drink”. Why should customers reach for the goods despite the lack of intoxicating effect? The Green Dealers cites the hemp taste and the “interesting presentation” as purchasing arguments.
Are the Lidl cannabis products even allowed to be sold?
Yes, hemp foods can be sold legally. But: The intoxicating substance THC must not be included!

Lidl has recently forced to remove some Lidl cannabis products due to interest from the police. The police is determining whether the promotional goods can be sold at all.
It was a slightly different kind of green deal that Lidl had agreed with start-up The Green Dealers. The discounter wanted to earn money from the company’s cannabis products and probably trusted that they lacked an intoxicating effect.
Are Hemp Foods Harmful to Health?
Cannabis seeds contain a lot of vegetable protein, fiber and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The seeds are a high-quality food and, in unprocessed form or as oil, are just as healthy as linseed.
However, nutritionist warn against snacking on too much Lidl cannabis chocolate. Just because the chocolate contains healthy seeds does not make it a healthy food.
Can I legally buy cannabis oil that gets me high?
No! The intoxicating hash oil with THC is illegal in Germany.
The over-the-counter hemp seed oil is declared as a high-quality but harmless cooking oil.
Even the freely available CBD-containing extracts from fiber hemp do not get you high: They contain less than 0.2% of the psychoactive THC – and are considered food supplements without the intoxicating effects of cannabis.

1. Hemp seeds are incredibly nutritious
Technically a nut, hemp seeds are very nutritious. They have a mild, nutty taste and are often referred to as hemp hearts.
Hemp seeds contain over 30% fat. They are exceptionally rich in two essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3).
They also contain gamma linolenic acid, which has been linked to several health benefits.
Hemp seeds are a great source of protein as more than 25% of their total calories come from high quality protein.
This is significantly more than similar foods like chia seeds and flax seeds, which provide around 16-18%.
Hemp seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals like phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc.
Hemp seeds can be consumed raw, cooked, or roasted. Hemp seed oil is also very healthy and has been used as a food / medicine in China for at least 3,000 years.
2. Hemp seeds can reduce the risk of heart disease.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide.
Interestingly, consuming hemp seeds can reduce the risk of heart disease through a number of mechanisms.
They contain large amounts of the amino acid arginine, which is used in the body to produce nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide is a gas molecule that dilates and relaxes blood vessels, resulting in lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease.
In a large study of more than 13,000 people, increased arginine intake was linked to decreased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP is an inflammatory marker that has been linked to heart disease.

4. Hemp seeds are a great source of vegetable protein
About 25% of the calories in hemp seeds come from protein, which is relatively high.
In fact, hemp seeds provide amounts of protein that are similar to those of beef and lamb. 30 grams of hemp seeds or 2-3 tablespoons provide around 11 grams of protein.
They are considered a complete source of protein, meaning they provide all of the essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are not produced in the body and must be obtained from food.

5. Hemp seeds can reduce symptoms of PMS and menopause
Up to 80% of women of childbearing age may experience physical or emotional symptoms caused by premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
These symptoms are most likely caused by sensitivity to the hormone prolactin.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), found in hemp seeds, produces prostaglandin E1, which reduces the effects of prolactin.
In a study in women with PMS, consuming 1 gram of essential fatty acids (including 210 mg GLA) per day resulted in a significant decrease in symptoms.
Other studies have shown that evening primrose oil, which is high in GLA, is very effective in reducing symptoms for women who have failed other PMS therapies.
It decreased chest pain and tenderness, depression, irritability, and fluid retention associated with PMS.
Because hemp seeds are high in GLA, several studies have shown that hemp seeds can also reduce menopause symptoms.
Exactly how this works is not known, but it has been suggested that the GLA in hemp seeds could help regulate the hormonal imbalances and inflammation associated with menopause.
