As an Expat in Germany, going on hikes will expose you to fantastic landcape that a lot of places in Germany offer.

German winter lifestyle offers every Expat something to do! Below is a list of beautiful winter hikes that you can try in winter in Germany:

1. Berchtesgadener Land

In the winter wonderland of Berchtesgaden , well-maintained and cleared hiking trails are available even when it’s freezing cold. Well-known hikes and paths lead around the Abtsdorfer See or through the Klausbachtal. You can walk in the footsteps of salt on the brine pipeline path from the Berchtesgaden salt mine to the saltworks in Bad Reichenhall. The Berchtesgaden National Park also shows its most beautiful side in the winter months

2. Oberharz

One of the best hikes in winter! When there is heavy snowfall, a  wide variety of hiking trails are cleared in the Upper Harz so that nothing stands in the way of wonderful winter hikes. There are exciting routes in and around Sankt Andreasberg, Schulenberg, Wildemann, Altenau, Torfhaus and Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The routes range from 2 to 11 kilometers and go at heights of around 900 meters. There are also tours for snowshoeing that you can either book on site or experience on your own

3. Breitachklamm near Oberstdorf

hikes

The hiking trail through the Breitachklamm , the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe, offers a unique experience of nature in Oberstdorf  . Frozen waterfalls become curtains made of ice, snow-covered rock walls show impressively how winter changes the appearance of nature. It is considered of the easy hikes. The route is about 5.6 kilometers long and extends from Oberstdorf Tiefenbach to the neighboring Kleinwalsertal. With a duration of just over two hours, the hike is perfect for a weekend getaway. The Gasthof Breitachklamm, the Grenzgasthof Walserschanz and the Alpe Dornach offer opportunities for a stopover. The guided night hikes are particularly suitable for nocturnal people

4. Solingen

In Solingen you can also find wonderful hiking trails right on your doorstep. Around 400 kilometers of hiking trails are marked around the city. Past the densely wooded Wupper Mountains, the protected Ohligser Heide and idyllic brooks, there are a total of nine different tours and they also have a very special charm in winter. Particularly popular is the 75-kilometer-long blade path , which of course cannot be discovered in one day, but relaxed in stages.

5. Masserberg in the Thüringer Forest

hikes

At an altitude of more than 800 meters, the municipality of Masserberg in the Thuringian Forest not only offers a breathtaking snow paradise, but also pure relaxation. If you still want to be active, there are various hiking trails for you: How about a circular hike over the Werrar spring or a hike to the Langertfelsen? With more than 20 different tours, there is something for every hiking enthusiast

6. Schwangau

hikes

The village of Schwangau in the Allgäu is a real winter paradise: The snow-covered Neuschwanstein Castle and the smaller Hohenschwangau Castle next to it look like a fairy tale. The area can be discovered on various hiking trails in the surrounding area, for example on the one-hour hiking trail around the Alpine lake

7. Waldskulpturenweg in Sauerland

hikes

The 23-kilometer forest sculpture trail in the Sauerland is also beautiful to look at in winter . A total of eleven works of art meander up and downhill here, which are particularly effective in the white landscape. Internationally known artists have been exhibiting their works on the hiking trail from Bad Berleburg to Schmallenberg since 2010. Bad Berleburg, the “wonder world on the Rothaarsteig”, is a popular holiday region, full of untouched nature and scenic beauty. The picturesque half-timbered houses give the surrounding villages a special charm.

8. Bad Kohlgrub

hikes

The Hörnle hiking and skiing mountain in Bad Kohlgrub is also a perfect destination for families and nature lovers in winter. The mountain in the Ammergau Alps is just under an hour’s drive from Munich and Augsburg and can not only be climbed by sports enthusiasts: locals only need about 45 minutes to get to the summit at 1,548 meters, but beginners can also make the way up – albeit at a significantly slower speed. The effort is worth it: when you arrive at the top, the host of the Hörnlehütte has delicious Kaiserschmarren and refreshing cold drinks ready – and the view is simply fantastic!

9. Altmuehltal

hikes

The air is ice-cold and clear, the landscape covered in white: even if the Altmühltal Nature Park is a popular summer destination, the nature reserve fog and snow look very good in the winter months. If you want to explore more than just the area, take one of the hiking trails that leads from Kelheim along the Danube to Weltenburg Abbey.

10. Heimgarten & Herzogstand

hikes

One of the more difficult hikes for those who are used to winter hiking. The hike from Walchensee to Heimgarten (1790m) and then via a beautiful ridge to Herzogstand (1731m) is a real classic in the foothills of the Alps. The view is great, the path is very beautiful and varied – and never really difficult – and at the summit of the Heimgarten (Heimgartenhütte) and a little below the Herzogstand ( Berggasthaus Herzogstand ) two beautiful, promising huts await the accomplished hiker. Downhill it is then quite brisk on a good path (as described here ), or knee-friendly with the very cheap  Herzogstandbahn . From our point of view the most beautiful route on the well-known – and heavily frequented – classic in the Alps. Tip!
