What is the German citizenship / naturalization test?
In order to complete the naturalization of people without German citizenship, successful participation in the naturalization test is required. The naturalization test serves as proof of knowledge of the legal and social order and the living conditions in Germany.
Who has to take the citizenship test and who doesn’t?
People who live permanently in Germany without German citizenship, meet the naturalization requirements and apply for naturalization at the naturalization authority are obliged to take the naturalization test.
The naturalization test, in which knowledge of the legal and social order and living conditions in Germany is proven, does not have to be taken by persons under 16 years of age. The same applies to people who are mentally, physically or emotionally incapable of taking the naturalization test.
Also exempt from the list of questions is anyone who has a German school leaving certificate or who can prove that they have successfully completed a degree at a German university in the fields of law, social sciences, social sciences, political or administrative sciences.

How does the naturalization test work?
An examination date for the naturalization test must be requested from the responsible test center; the examination fee of 25 euros must be paid in cash when registering. The registration deadline is usually 3 weeks. Before the start of the test, the identity is determined on the basis of official identification documents.
During the processing time of 60 minutes, the correct answer from four possible answers must be selected for 33 test questions. Aids are not permitted in the naturalization test. The test results are then transmitted by post and can contain the predicates “successfully participated” or “participated”.

What happens if I fail the naturalization test?
The naturalization test consists of a questionnaire with 33 test questions. At least 17 of the naturalization test questions must be answered correctly to pass. If you fail, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) provides the possibility of repeating the naturalization test. The naturalization process is not endangered, the process is only delayed. There is no limit to the number of attempts, but an examination fee of 25 euros per attempt is charged.
