Empty shelves at IKEA furniture giant now announces “extraordinary measures”

Like many other companies around the world, IKEA is also grappling with the global supply crisis. The Swedish furniture giant IKEA is also currently being shaken by the global supply crisis, and customers sometimes have to wait much longer for their products than usual. Now the group is announcing “extraordinary measures”.

IKEA facing a global supply chain problem

The prices for raw materials and components are exploding, freight costs are rising dramatically in global trade, there are also major problems in the supply chains: It is this triad that is currently worrying almost every company and is often reflected in the wallet of consumers.

IKEA customers also feel this shortage of materials from time to time: On Facebook, customers in the community area of IKEA Germany complain that they are not receiving products or that they are not in stock. “It would be great if the Billy could finally be bought again at a depth of 40 cm, but it has not been available for many weeks. Why IKEA? ”A customer wants to know, for example. The popular fabric shark Blahaj is also not available in many places, as another customer notes.

Request from IKEA

The furniture giant’s answer follows promptly and is now also available for everyone to read on the IKEA Germany homepage : “The past pandemic year presented us all with challenges that we mastered together with distance, consideration and mutual support,” it says there .

“However, the situation has also led to an imbalance in the global supply of goods, which also affects Ikea. With extraordinary measures we will do everything to ensure the availability of your favorite Ikea products at the usual low prices – online and in our Ikea furniture stores.”

IKEA: “Struggle with bottlenecks”

IKEA also explains that last year Corona ensured that “global sea transport capacities” presented challenges to all companies that are dependent on sea transport. “Both with regard to the availability of raw materials as well as procurement and production.”

The result: persistent disruptions, congested ports, historically high demand. That led to restrictions in operation. “We are still struggling with transport bottlenecks, which affects availability and delivery.” But you do everything possible to make products available again quickly.

The “extraordinary measure” that IKEA is addressing: the furniture giant is now buying its own container, chartering additional ships and using rail transport from China to Europe, they say. In addition, work is being carried out at full speed on increasing stocks.

IKEA’s head of logistics: “Tried to lease container ships”

Peter Langskov, Head of Logistics for IKEA Denmark, goes into an interview with “Euronews” in more detail on the difficult situation: “The global supply chains are under enormous pressure.” That is why they were looking for alternatives. “We tried to build a rail link from Asia to Europe so that we could use trains for transport. We also tried to lease container ships and bought empty ships. But they also have to be brought back and that is a problem. “

It is difficult to predict exactly when the situation for customers and companies will return to normal. Also because it is a problem that currently affects all industries.
